American Mediates Ukrainian Discussions in Abu Dhabi as White House Seeks for Settlement

Diplomatic negotiations including American, Russian, and Ukrainian delegates commenced in Abu Dhabi this week, marking the latest step in efforts to forge a resolution to end the continuing hostilities in Ukraine.

Key Representatives and Opening Discussions

American military official the US representative apparently held talks with a Russian team on the eve of the talks, with discussions proceeding into Tuesday.

“Discussions are progressing positively and we maintain hope. Secretary Driscoll is closely synchronised with the White House ... as these talks progress,” an official representative commented.

Ukraine’s top intelligence official, Kyrylo Budanov, was also expected to take part in the proceedings, though the exact format was uncertain whether face-to-face engagement with Russian representatives would take place or if separate bilateral meetings would be conducted.

The composition of the Russian delegation was not immediately clear. “We cannot provide details. Our position is to monitor press coverage,” a Russian spokesperson told official outlets.

Context and Updated Proposal

These meetings come after prior discussions in a European nation where American and Kyiv representatives modified a draft US plan for ending the war.

Moscow has not yet endorsed the most recent draft of the proposal and is unlikely to agree to many of the Ukrainian changes.

Russia’s top diplomat, Sergei Lavrov, declared that any modified peace plan must adhere to the “essence and wording” of what was agreed during earlier summit talks between the two nations.

Global Responses and Apprehensions

European leaders are apparently finding it difficult to remain involved in the process as American representatives drive the efforts.

The Finnish president, a European figure, who has emerged as a key contact between the US and European officials, stated that the next few days would be decisive in efforts to secure a resolution.

He reportedly held discussions with Kyiv’s leader and Nato representatives, emphasizing that “Ukraine’s destiny must be determined by Ukrainians, and with European security falling under Europe’s purview.”

Meanwhile, the French president, Emmanuel Macron, cautioned against a peace deal that would represent a “capitulation” for Ukraine.

“The current proposal indicates what Moscow might find acceptable. But does this imply it should be endorsed by Ukraine and Europe? Absolutely not,” he declared.

Details of the Original American Plan

The US plan was reportedly made up of 28 points and was based on discussions between US and Moscow representatives, with input from Kyiv defense officials.

Major elements of the plan allegedly involved:

  • Ukraine ceding areas currently occupied by Moscow
  • Further zones that might be required to be voluntarily given up
  • Limits on the scale of the Ukrainian army
  • Amnesty for all sides in the war regarding violations

Recent Developments and Continuing Difficulties

The US representative reportedly went to Kyiv to update Zelenskyy on the proposal and press rapid acceptance.

The demand, combined with the disclosure of the proposal, apparently took by surprise Kyiv and EU authorities.

Zelenskyy reportedly that the nation was facing one of the toughest periods in its history and was being forced to decide between “surrendering honor or sacrificing a vital partner.”

Subsequently, Driscoll informed alliance ambassadors on the plan in the capital, with one attendee describing it as “an extremely difficult session” and noting that EU officials were shocked by both the substance and manner of the presentation.

Washington later softened its position, stating that the 28-point proposal was an “starting position for talks” rather than a definitive ultimatum.

Security Situation During Talks

As peace efforts continue, Russian forces has maintained its nightly assaults on Ukraine’s urban centers.

Moscow’s forces reportedly launched numerous of missiles and many of unmanned aircraft at targets in and around Kyiv, as stated by Ukrainian sources.

Zelenskyy emphasized that the Kremlin must not feel it could prevail in the conflict while talks were underway.

“The priority is coordinated diplomatic movement among all partners, through shared endeavors. Pressure on Russia must deliver results,” he affirmed.

The capital’s leader confirmed that multiple people had been fatally injured in the overnight attack on the capital.
