Harassment Campaign Towards McCann Family Julia Wandelt, aged 24, is accused of a campaign of harassment against the relatives of Madeleine, who went missing from a Portuguese resort in Portugal in 2007 at the age of three. The Polish national bombarded Kate and Gerry McCann and their adult children, Sean and Amelie, with countless communications, messages, voicemails and letters between 2022 and earlier this year, and appeared at their home insisting on a DNA test, jurors learned during proceedings. Official Statements Giving evidence on Tuesday, the lead detective on Madeleine's disappearance, said he had gone against procedure to test Wandelt “intending she may stop her actions towards the McCann family”. DCI Mark Cramwell said 13 people had previously claimed to be the abducted child but that: “We would not take DNA unless we believed that person was Madeleine because I aimed to prevent setting a precedent. “If it became known in the media I had taken DNA from someone probably not to be Madeleine, I was concerned I would have had many persons coming forward saying ‘I’m Madeleine’. “I truly possess major concerns about contacting the family to say I aim to take DNA from an individual – that could have built up their expectations. It could have been quite emotionally damaging and difficult for the family.” Genetic Testing He said authorities had already judged Wandelt not to be Madeleine due to a lack of resemblance and that she was not the same age than the child. But, he said, after learning Leicester police planned to arrest Wandelt on stalking charges, he “decided that the DNA would be taken upon arrest”. He stated: “A comparison took place. It absolutely confirmed that Julia Wandelt is not Madeleine McCann.” Legal Testimony The court heard that in April this year, Cranwell visited Wandelt while detained and told her that her DNA had been tested alongside Madeleine’s and that the samples did not match. The court learned he told Wandelt while speaking with her: “You are not Madeleine McCann.” Testimony indicated that throughout their discussion, Wandelt inquired: “Do you really want to find Madeleine?”, and the detective told the jury he answered: “Yes.” He said despite the test, he believed Wandelt “would suggest we have manipulated the sample”, adding: “It was possible she would refuse to acknowledge she isn't Madeleine despite being given scientific proof.” Psychological Toll During previous hearings, testimony revealed how the McCanns were left scared and distressed by their “unnerving” and “extremely troubling” interactions with Wandelt and her co-defendant Karen Spragg, 61, from Cardiff, as the two women attempted to demand a DNA test. The jury were told how the defendants made progressively odd plans” to acquire Kate McCann’s DNA, which included searching the McCanns’ bins and stealing utensils from restaurants that they had eaten in. Wandelt and Spragg both contest one count of stalking. The case remains active.
