Congress Approves Legislation to Make Public Epstein Files

The Senate on this Tuesday quickly approved to a measure that will force the release of official records related to the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, after a near-unanimous vote in the lower house and a shift by the president and his GOP allies. The administration relented after an extended period of trying to forestall the cross-party initiative involving a scandal that has plagued the president since his return to the White House.

Swift Passage in Congress

Senators proceeded by general agreement, which requires approval from each senator but avoids a individual voting process, expediting the process. Hours earlier, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a massive majority.

Citizens have waited long enough. The survivors have waited patiently,” the Senate Democratic leader said in a floor speech on Tuesday, before requesting the chamber to pass it unanimously. “Reveal the truth. Allow openness to prevail.”

Presidential Signature

This legislation next heads to Donald Trump for his endorsement. He indicated on the previous day that he would sign the measure.

Even though the president has for months dismissed the uproar over the official management of the scandal as a “Democrat hoax”, he signalled his support for the legislation over the weekend, and stated he would give his assent if it comes to him.

Response

The Democratic party, along with those affected and their representatives who were seated in a viewing area, applauded after the bill was passed. Lone dissent came from Clay Higgins, who stated he worried the measure would reveal personal information of people, those under scrutiny and others implicated in the investigation.
