A uniquely yellow-fronted apartment block visible behind assisted us verify the video.

Our team is analyzing images and video posted earlier today that depict the aftermath of a reported car bomb explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he later died of his injuries. A probe is under way.

Our starting point to verify the site from which the images originated was based on posts saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video.

Identifying other buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed the exact location the footage were taken.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
