A trio of officers were killed and no fewer than 15 others got wounded in an apparently deliberate gas explosion at a country home in the northern part of Italy.

Sequence of Events

The explosion was triggered as officers and emergency crews entered the residence close to the Verona region to carry out an removal notice for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three victims who died were members of the Italian military police.

Legal Proceedings

One male and one female got detained at the location and another man who ran away after the blast was found shortly later. The trio have been taken to the hospital.

The blast could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the scene displayed the building turned into a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.

The president of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, explained the farmhouse was facing an court order due to unpaid amounts accrued by the siblings.

Negotiators had been dispatched to speak to the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the officers reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect one of the siblings caused the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander Commander Papagno informed the media.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the detonation immediately struck our members,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also found at the property, the Interior Minister said.

Impact Assessment

The wounded by the explosion comprised 11 other members of the military police as well as three members of national police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

He believed the explosion had taken place on a story above the doorway and informed reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the explosion, he mentioned personnel had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the propane tanks being activated”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors told reporters, noting that the family members had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto joined other elected representatives in honoring the three officers who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
