No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an rapid rate, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This pause was requested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
