Militiamen smirk as they travel on the back of a transport truck, hurrying alongside a line of nine lifeless forms and heading towards the setting African sunset.

"Observe this extensive accomplishment. Look at this act of genocide," one cheers.

He beams as he directs the recording device on his person and his fellow fighters, their RSF identification visible: "They shall all perish in this manner."

The men are exulting in a atrocity that relief organizations fear claimed the lives of over 2,000 civilians in the Sudanese city of el-Fasher last month.

A Community Severed from the World

Following their control of the city under blockade for almost two years, from August the militia moved to strengthen its position and restrict the surviving residents.

Space-based imagery show that fighters started to erect a massive earth barrier - a raised dirt embankment - encircling the perimeter of the city, blocking entry points and preventing humanitarian assistance.

As the siege worsened, multiple people were killed in an paramilitary attack on a place of worship on mid-September, while the UN said 53 further were slain in aerial and heavy weapon strikes on a refugee settlement in the autumn.

At dawn on late October the RSF defeated the final army strongholds and captured the central base in the city, the headquarters of the Army Division, as the military retreated.

Perhaps the most disturbing footage to appear and studied showed the consequences of a massacre at a educational facility on the west of the city, where scores dead bodies were visible spread over the area.

An older man wearing a white tunic remained alone surrounded by the bodies. He looked to glance as a fighter armed with a weapon moved along the staircase towards the individual. Raising his weapon, the gunman released a single bullet at the victim, who collapsed to the surface lifeless.

"For what reason is this person yet breathing," a combatant exclaimed. "Execute him."

Orbital photography taken on late October appeared to substantiate that executions were also carried out on the roads of the city, as reported by a study issued by the university analysis team.

One witness who provided testimony said they had witnessed "multiple of our relatives being killed - these individuals were assembled in one place and all killed."

RSF Commanders Attempt to Carry Out Damage Control

In the days that followed the massacre, militia leader admitted that his fighters had committed "wrongdoings" and said the incidents would be investigated.

Part of the arrested was subsequent to a analysis documenting his murders. Carefully orchestrated and edited recording posted on the RSF's authorized messaging channel depict the commander being led into a detention area at a detention facility on the edges of the city.

Meanwhile, the paramilitary force and connected digital profiles began trying to reframe the narrative.

Posts presenting its militiamen distributing assistance to inhabitants were circulated by several accounts, while the paramilitary's media office shared several videos purporting to show the compassionate treatment of government detainees.

Despite the social media campaign being used by the militia, their actions in el-Fasher have provoked worldwide outrage.
