The City of Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride to Proceed for World Cup Despite Objections by Egypt and Iran

Plans for Pride-focused events and activities throughout the city amid next summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament are proceeding unabated, despite Iranian and Egyptian soccer associations voiced strong concerns regarding a scheduled “Pride Match.”

Stadium Policy and City Celebrations

Seattle's planning committee have confirmed they are “proceeding as planned” with Pride activities in the city center. This coincides with the Group G match between Iran and Egypt on June 26th. Additionally, FIFA will permit rainbow flags inside the match venue.

“In our role as hosts, our role is to prepare our city to welcome visitors for the matches and oversee the city experience outside of Seattle Stadium,” stated a committee representative.

Legal Background of Objections

Homosexuality is illegal under Iranian law, while in Egypt, morality laws are frequently employed to prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Egypt's football association declared it refused to be associated with celebrations that “directly contradict the cultural, religious and social values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” Similarly, Iran’s football federation publicly registered “its opposition against the issue.”

The Governing Body's Position Regarding Flags and Banners

Fifa maintains full authority over match venues on matchdays. Although it prohibits political signage with overtly political content, it allows flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” which explicitly includes the Pride flag. This regulation was in effect at the previous tournament in Qatar and was reaffirmed following reports of authorities confiscating flags.

  • The Pride Match concept was devised to highlight the city's proud history of advocating for equality.
  • An artistic competition has been commissioned to create images to commemorate the occasion.
  • Planners are committed to making sure every visitor are welcomed in the city throughout the 48-team competition.

The region hosts one of the nation’s largest communities of Iranian descent, a thriving Egyptian diaspora, and rich communities from every competing country. “We’re committed is to ensuring all residents and visitors encounter the warmth, respect and dignity that defines our part of the country,” the statement concluded.
