The acclaimed crime series AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th installment, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-part series created by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast this spring, according to the network.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The last season wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been circulating ever since, but official word only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven will open with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to tackle misconduct within the police force.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

Yet, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the shadows, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans watch the developments of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Martin Compston called being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is back! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together soon."

Series Legacy

The drama premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of series six drew the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and producers said at the time there were no plans for further series.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on this week that a new season is now being produced.
