Unmanned Attack on UN Facility in War-Torn Sudan Kills 6 UN Personnel

A unmanned attack hit a UN compound in conflict-ridden Sudan on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of six peacekeeping personnel, according to a declaration.

The strike occurred at a UN facility in the city of Kadugli, situated in the central region of Kordofan.

8 other peacekeepers were wounded in the strike. All the those affected are citizens of Bangladesh, deployed with the United Nations mission in Abyei.

“Assaults targeting UN personnel could amount to war crimes under international law,” the statement said, calling for the perpetrators for the “unjustifiable” attack to be held accountable.

Army Accuses Fighter Group

The government forces attributed the strike on the RSF fighters, a notorious armed faction that has been at war with the army for dominance over the country for over 24 months.

The attack “shows the subversive nature of the paramilitary group and those behind it,” the army said in a communication.

Context of the Disputed Area

The resource-abundant Abyei is a contested territory between Sudan and its southern neighbor, and the United Nations contingent has been deployed there since 2011, when South Sudan gained its independence from Sudan.

Demands for an swift truce in Sudan were also expressed to allow “a broad, all-encompassing and Sudanese-owned peace process” to settle the war.

Country Plunged into Conflict Since 2023

Sudan was plunged into widespread violence in April 2023 when a political rivalry between the army and the RSF escalated into full-scale combat in the capital, Khartoum and across the country.

  • The war has taken over 40,000 lives, a toll human rights organizations consider a low estimate.
  • Recent hostilities has focused on Kordofan, particularly since the RSF captured El Fasher.
  • The war has devastated urban areas and has been characterized by atrocities, like widespread sexual violence and ethnic slaughter.
  • These crimes have been labeled crimes against humanity by international bodies.
  • The conflict has also precipitated the globe's most dire humanitarian emergency and forced parts of the country into starvation.
