Throughout a large portion of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive in a realm of memories constructed from the past of the villain Henry. Their mission for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" has them witness again a traumatic incident from Henry's early years—a moment that could contain the key to defeating him once and for all.

The Discovery in the Mine Shaft

After locating Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a cave that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a viewing device found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view with the shape, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.

They watch a Henry as a boy find an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, striking Henry in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the trauma went deeper than a simple act of survival.

In keeping with mysteries in volume 2, the full story behind the events in the tunnel was first explored the theatrical production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which transported a vessel into a plane later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who came back in a catatonic condition with an entirely new blood.

That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in Nevada. One of his scientists took experimental components to sell to the Russian agents, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. This spy in the tunnel is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Considering what is understood of his research, the briefcase almost certainly contained samples of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, which triggered the development of his psychic abilities—powers he would inadvertently transfer to the kids under Brenner's care.

Another possibility, the case could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that Henry was transported in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later fundamentally changed. As a youth, he struggles with the whispers of a malevolent force, reminiscent of how the character Will was controlled by the entity in an earlier season.

A Weaponized Emotion

Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine shows how deeply scarring the incident was for him. Even as he controls the Hive Mind and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche remains. Vecna uses fear, and the series is building toward a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his personal demons to fortify himself.

His confrontation has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now understands what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a critical advantage in the series finale that awaits.
